SISTERS OF SONG || MICHAEL ‘SURESHOT’ BROME

Unique interpretations of timeless classics from the American Songbook & Specially commissioned Spoken Word opens BootLeg Jazz SISTERS OF SONG: Leicester’s gifted and luminous Mellow Baku, one of Midlands finest jazz voices curates and compares an evening of six siren sisters of jazz song each giving their unique interpretations of their favourite jazz standards from the American Songbook Sisters of Song are six delightful and dexterous singers all hailing from Leicester each of who has forged a reputation as an accomplished singer on the jazz scene; they are Ola Smidtz, edgy and eclectic, the compelling and exuberant Carol Leeming, Chloe Singer full of soulful dynamism, the richly melodic Sally Barker, the honyed sophistication from Rebecca Stickland and Some one else? Expect an edgy but elegant night, full of passion, finesse and style. The six sisters of song will be ably accompanied by Mike Sole, (keys,) Phill Edgill (drums), Neil Seagot, (bass,) with guest appearances on saxophone from Rob Charles and Marcus Joseph.

MICHAEL ‘SURESHOT’ BROME: BootLeg Jazz kicks off in lyrical style with a Spoken Word Poet Michael ‘SureShot’ Brome. Inspired by his love and admiration for the female jazz voice, SureShot performs a specifically commissioned Spoken Word piece entitled ‘Whose That Lady’. Using samples from his extensive collection of jazz albums; mixed/spun by DJ Phychomantus and interspersed with support from the live jazz trio, SureShot embarks on a literary journey espousing the joy of the female jazz voice.

LATE NIGHT JAZZ: Stay late for our DJ set and bliss-out to rare-jazz grooves spun by the busy DJs behind the Jazz Shambles radio show. This event has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of Citizens Eye and Jazz Shambles Radio.

Friday 26th April:

THE GREAT WEE BAND || THE FREE RANGERS

From 7:30pm An evening busting with musical brilliance, exploring and interpreting the great American jazz compositions by the trailblazing and iconic jazz pioneers.

THE GREAT WEE BAND: The Great Wee Band are Henry Lowther (trumpet), Jim Mullen (guitar), Steve Watts (bass), Stu Butterfield (drums). A ensemble of players amongst the most well-respected and illustrious jazz musicians in the UK today. All top players in their own right, but something special happens when they get together. Warm, relaxed, subtle and unfailingly melodic, their combined sound is irresistible

THE FREE-RANGERS:  Opening the night will be a set by the popular and industrious local band The Free Rangers; Nick Hislam and Jim Bailey (saxophones) David Williams (guitar) Paula Robinson (bass) John Runcie (drums). This saxophone led quintet take their inspiration from the free-jazz revolutionary and musical dexterity of the great jazz pioneers.

LATE NIGHT JAZZ: A night of blistering free-improv and straight-ahead jazz will be brought to a close by a late night Jazz Jam. The house band will provide the musical foundations and musicians are invited to come forward to jam, improvise and create somethin’ else. Leicester Jazz House are sponsoring the evening.

Saturday 27th April:

PETER EDWARDS TRIO with special guest MELLOW BAKU || MIKE SOLE

An extravagant evening full to the brim with the finest young UK Jazz talent with expressive musical arrangements typifying 21st century jazz at its best.

PETER EDWARDS TRIO with special guest MELLOW BAKU: Peter Edwards is a young man with impeccable musical credentials; a Masters graduate from Trinity College, past scholar of Tomorrows Warriors and now Musical Director of The Nu Orchestra. The Trio are Peter Edwards (piano) Nick Walsh (bass) and Saleem Raman (drums). Collectively they skilfully creative sophisticated and sublime jazz compositions, melodic intuitive and full of grove. As a special feature, supreme jazz songstress Mellow Baku will join the Trio on stage as guest vocalist to add her favour and magic to the musical excursion.

MIKE SOLE: Mike Sole a keyboard player extraordinaire. With a flourishing reputation Mike is a jazz virtuoso whose abilities know few barriers and whose performances always leave audiences spellbound. This solo set will reveal his highly accomplished compositions and unique interpretative skills.

LATE NIGHT JAZZ: BootLeg Jazz will be brought to a close by a Double DJ set. Tony Minvielle, jazz DJ stalwart and connoisseur will be spinning tunes from his eclectic jazz collection. And the Jazz Shambles boys Steve Beverley and Simon will be winding up the proceedings with their usual tasteful jazz music eccentricity. The evening is being sponsored by Crumblin’ Cookie

Free events: Friday 26th & Saturday 27th April: Early Evening Acoustic Jazz:

4pm – 7:00pm

Free jazz. Come and relax and listen to fresh new jazz influenced acts. These early evening sessions will feature performances by talented local artists, be they new, emerging or established artists exploring new material or band configurations. This eclectic line up of talented local artists features, singers, multi – instrumentalist, spoken word artists, and wholesome permeations of quality jazz. These are events are free; come down and witness the vanguard of the future of jazz.
